Which necklace to wear with a saree or a lehenga

Choker, neck set or long haar? Match your necklace to your neckline, saree or lehenga, and the occasion, with this simple guide to Indian jewellery styling.

The right necklace can change the whole look of an outfit. The easiest way to choose is to start with the neckline, then think about the outfit and the occasion.

Start with the neckline

  • Deep or sweetheart necklines: a layered look or a long haar fills the space beautifully.
  • Round and boat necks: a close-fitting neck set or choker sits above the neckline and looks neat.
  • High necks and collars: skip the necklace and let statement earrings and a rakdi do the work.

With a saree

Silk and Banarasi sarees with a heavy border call for a bold piece, such as a kundan neck set that sits close and does not compete with the pallu. With lighter georgette or chiffon sarees, a single layer like the Rava Golden Set keeps the look elegant.

With a lehenga

Lehengas with an open neckline and a dupatta on one shoulder are made for statement jewellery. A grand Jadau Haar with Earrings works for the wedding or reception, while the Kundan Lotus Set is lighter for mehendi and sangeet.

Match the metal tone and colours

Gold-tone kundan and jadau suit red, maroon, emerald, mustard and pastel outfits alike. If your outfit has a strong colour, pick a set whose stones echo it, such as ruby-red drops with a maroon lehenga or green stones with emerald silk.

Balance the rest of your jewellery

If the necklace is heavy, keep the earrings matching but simple. If you are wearing a choker, add longer earrings to draw the eye down. And with a statement haar, one or two bangles are enough.
