Imitation jewellery can look just as rich as an heirloom, and with a little care it stays that way for years. The gold-tone plating, kundan stones and pearl work only need protection from three things: moisture, chemicals and scratches. Here is the routine we follow at Jawaharat.
Put it on last, take it off first
Perfume, hairspray, lotion and sindoor are the biggest enemies of plating. Finish your make-up and let your perfume dry before you wear your necklace set or rakdi. At the end of the day, take the jewellery off before you remove make-up or change clothes.
Keep it away from water and sweat
- Do not shower, swim or exercise in your jewellery.
- If a piece gets wet, dry it straight away with a soft cotton cloth.
- After a long, warm function, wipe the back of necklaces and earrings, where sweat collects.
Clean it gently
Wipe each piece with a dry, soft cloth after wearing. For dust in kundan settings, use a clean, dry make-up brush. Never use soap, toothpaste, silver polish or liquid cleaners; they strip the plating and can loosen stones.
Store every piece separately
Keep each set in its own pouch or box so stones do not scratch other pieces and chains do not tangle. Add a sachet of silica gel to your jewellery box to absorb humidity, especially during the monsoon. Store heavy haar and rakdi flat rather than hanging them, so the strings keep their shape.
Handle pearls and moti work with care
Pieces with moti piroi, like our Kundan Rakdi with Moti Piroi, are strung by hand. Avoid pulling on the strands, and lay them flat to dry if they ever get damp.
Quick checklist
- Perfume and make-up first, jewellery last.
- No water, no sweat, no chemicals.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after every wear.
- Store separately, dry and flat.
