Jewellery Care Guide

How to clean, store and care for kundan, pearl and gold-tone imitation jewellery so it stays bright for years: daily habits, cleaning by type and storage tips.

Last updated 3 min read

All Jawaharat pieces are imitation jewellery: a gold-tone plated alloy with kundan, stones, beads and pearls. Plating and settings like these last for years when they are kept dry and away from chemicals. Here is everything you need to know.

Everyday habits

  • Put your jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray, lotion and make-up have dried.
  • Take it off first, before removing make-up, changing or sleeping.
  • Do not wear it in the shower, while swimming, at the gym or in the kitchen near steam.
  • Avoid pulling on chains, strings and earring hooks while dressing.

Cleaning by type

  • Gold-tone plating: wipe with a soft, dry cotton or microfibre cloth after wearing. Never use soap, toothpaste, lemon, silver polish or liquid cleaners.
  • Kundan and stones: dust them with a clean, dry make-up brush. Do not soak them; water can get behind the stones and loosen them.
  • Pearls and moti work: wipe gently with a dry cloth. Lay strands flat and never hang them while damp.
  • Beads and threads: keep threads dry and untangled. If a string feels loose, stop wearing the piece and contact us.

Storing your jewellery

  • Keep every piece in its own pouch or box so stones do not scratch each other.
  • Lay heavy necklaces, haars and rakdis flat instead of hanging them.
  • Store earrings in pairs, with jhumkas upright so the bells keep their shape.
  • Add a sachet of silica gel to your jewellery box, especially in the monsoon.
  • Keep the box away from bathrooms, windowsills and direct sunlight.

Travelling with jewellery

Pack each set in its pouch inside a small hard case, and keep it in your hand luggage. Put necklaces in last so nothing heavy presses on them.

If the shine fades

Like all plated jewellery, the finish can soften over time with sweat and heavy use. Wipe the piece with a dry cloth and store it airtight; this slows any change. Please do not try polishing powders or chemical cleaners, which remove plating.

Sensitive skin

If you notice redness or itching, stop wearing the piece and let your skin rest. Wearing jewellery for shorter periods and keeping it dry helps many people. If you have a metal allergy, check with us before ordering.

Quick checklist

  1. Perfume and make-up first, jewellery last.
  2. No water, sweat, steam or chemicals.
  3. Wipe with a soft dry cloth after every wear.
  4. Store separately, dry and flat.
